Tips to keep your cat out of Veterinary Emergency

Keeping your cat safe from harm is normally just a matter of a little bit of common sense and some good planning. After 10 years working in Veterinary Emergency and seeing hundreds of preventable emergencies, Jules & Divine Creatures’ affiliated Veterinarian, Dr Katie Hankins, talk below about a few tips on how to avoid a trip to ER.

Heat Stress –Heat stress common yet often overlooked.

Fleas – DO NOT USE DOG FLEA PRODUCTS ON CATS – this will poison them very effectively.

Ticks – Warm weather increases tick numbers and left untreated paralysis ticks will kill cats.

Car Accidents – Unfortunately cats are very prone to being hit by cars.

Dog Attacks – Unfortunately some dogs are very aggressive to cats and it’s a horrible way to die.

Holidays Lots of cats get fed by well-meaning neighbours & cat sitters during holidays. Unfortunately neighbours & cat sitters are not veterinary trained & are not always good at noticing when your cat is ill especially in the early stages. Find a reputable Cattery or kennels…

Is it really February already? Christmas and New Year are well and truly behind us. The relos have gone home… The kids are back at school… Fido and Felix have collapsed in a heap!

Most people plan a holiday immediately after their last one. So if you’ve got your calendar out trying to work out where and when, remember to check availability at Divine Creatures for your cat’s holiday as well. We’re already heavily booked for Christmas 2014.
February is of course our humid month and it can become quite unpleasant even on cooler days. Just because it’s overcast or the air temperature is a little lower still be diligent in checking on your pet’s comfort and well-being.
Because dogs and cats can’t release heat by sweating the way humans do, humidity can raise their body temperature. Keep an eye on them and make sure they’ve got fresh clean water and a cool place to rest.
Enjoy our last month of summer. With activity levels starting to normalise and with a little bit more time on our hands, it’s a great opportunity to hang out and spend more time with our divine creatures.

Best wishes from Jules and the team from Divine Creatures

Is your cat a tad eccentric with a unique personality, maybe it sleeps in the dog’s basket or is a bit of a clown with a rebellious but fun loving attitude? Maybe you own an Aquarius cat?

Aquarius cats are really tomboys (regardless of gender) and love to run around especially outdoors in nature, climb, explore but also tangle themselves in a ball of wool and their curiosity can lead to a level of chaos that you can only laugh at.

Quirky, inventive, happy and friendly, Aquarius cats are very social in larger groups of animals even including other species but at the same time will happily occupy themselves when spending quality time alone.

Compatible Owners: Libra and Gemini
Favourite Food: Mice!
Best Attribute: Adventure and good times
Worst Attribute: Hunting (& killing)

Happy birthday to all of our Aqaurius cats!

Keeping Your Cat Out of Hospital

Keeping your cat safe from harm is normally just a matter of a little bit of common sense and some good planning. After 10 years working in Veterinary Emergency and seeing hundreds of preventable emergencies, Jules & Divine Creatures’ affiliated Veterinarian, Dr Katie Hankins, talk below about a few tips on how to avoid a trip to ER.

Heat Stress

Heat stress common yet often overlooked. Make sure your cat has a nice cool place to relax, fresh water and fresh food – flies love wet food that has been left out in summer. Some cats like iceblocks in their water bowl or some chilled fresh food.

Fleas

Fleas won’t kill your cat (they can kill kittens if there is an abundance of) but they make life very unpleasant for cats and owners alike. The fleas products like Frontline and Advantage are great so there really isn’t an excuse for having fleas. DO NOT USE DOG FLEA PRODUCTS ON CATS- this will poison them very effectively. Talk to us today about the most effective flea treatment to get ride of fleas once & for all!

Ticks

Warm weather increases tick numbers and left untreated paralysis ticks will kill cats. It’s a great idea to:

  1. Know what ticks look like so you know what you’re looking for – IXODES HOLOCYCLUS
  2. Tick search your cat every day – most ticks are attached for 3-5 days before they get sick. If you remove them early you may save your cat and save a costly vet bill. Cats can get sick after the tick is removed so they need to be kept cool and quiet for several days after you remove the tick.
  3. Frontline spray your cat every 2 weeks.
  4. Recognise the signs of tick paralysis – voice change, problems breathing, wobbly legs, lethargy, sometimes retching or vomiting, problems breathing – please get veterinary help asap if you see any of these signs.

Car Accidents

Unfortunately cats are very prone to being hit by cars. Keep your cat inside as much as possible. Don’t encourage your cat to play near the cars. It’s a great idea to have a reflective collar. I always recommend training your cat to walk on a harness & lead. This way you get the best of both worlds!

Dog Attacks

Unfortunately some dogs are very aggressive to cats and it’s a horrible way to die. If your cat is an outdoor cat, don’t encourage them to play in the front yard – pat and play with them in the house or backyard. Keep food and water bowls in the backyard. Make sure fences and gates are secure. Give your cat “bolt-holes” –areas they can climb and be out of reach of dogs.

Holidays

Lots of cats get fed by well-meaning neighbours & cat sitters during holidays. Unfortunately neighbours & cat sitters are not veterinary trained & are not always good at noticing when your cat is ill especially in the early stages. It’s a much better idea to have them looked after professionally. In Emergency, we would see some direly ill cats that don’t get veterinary attention until owners get back from holidays. Always make sure that you visit the boarding facility, check their qualifications & check they are a member of Pet Industry Association Australia. This will protect you & your cat if anything does go wrong while in their care.
